Chapter 26

Jaclyn

Day 25

Monday, November 21

During the meeting with the visitors from Story Park, shift change time arrived for the roadblock. But because they remained at the battle stations, everyone maintained their assigned positions. They walked the daughter and father—who revealed his name to be Chip when shaking hands at the end of the meeting—to the barricade. Velasquez waited until they disappeared from view before motioning to Brook for the walkie-talkie.

“Velasquez to Randy, over,” she said after keying the mic.

“This is Randy. I’ve got them.”

“Everything copacetic?”

“Seems to be. Nothing suspicious or concerning. No movement from anywhere nearby. Even the guy in the car at the school is sitting tight.”

Chip had mentioned there was one car that still ran in the neighborhood, a Dodge Dart in the process of being restored. The motor and mechanical aspects were already finished; however, the owner hadn’t yet addressed the upholstery or exterior. One of their HOA rules prevented working on vehicles, so he rented shop time somewhere in town when he wanted to work on it.

The electric scooters and eBikes stood in a row at the edge of the visitor lots, motionless and forever stationary. Similar to everywhere else in Yellowstone County and much of the contiguous forty-eight states, they had a variety of vehicles, mostly newer cars, many of which were electric or hybrid, but still plenty of gas-powered vehicles.

“Understood,” Velasquez replied. “They mentioned someone waiting at the school. It seems we’re clear for shift change. Agreed?”

“Go ahead. I’m going to make sure they get home okay.”

Jaclyn was uncertain of Randy’s location. She knew he wouldn’t be able to see the school or much of Story Park from the tree stand near the Sandoval farm. Ryan had frequented that watch location multiple times, informing Jaclyn that it provided a splendid vantage point of the river toward the east, as well as the open space between the Sandoval farm and Story Park.

However, he was unable to observe the entrance to Story Park. A stone-type wall encompassed the entire subdivision. It blocked the view of the actual homes, but some of the rooftops were visible. Chip mentioned that he resided on the west side and observed Rohn Land from a second-floor bedroom.

“We need a meeting to discuss their proposal,” Velasquez added.

“I figured,” Randy said. “Johannes? You got ears?”

“I’m here.” Johannes’s deep voice came through loud and clear.

“Keep Ryan in place and send the new roadblock shift. Everyone else can relax and make their way to the meeting house. We’ll start in thirty.”

“Copy that,” Johannes said.

Jaclyn, Brook, and John waited for their replacements. Velasquez and Pops remained at the roadblock since Velasquez wanted to ensure the new shift understood their continued state of alertness and the ongoing condition orange. The father and son Sandoval team, along with Cliff Pruitt, didn’t take long to arrive.

“What’d you promise them?” Cliff asked, his tone accusatory.

Pops squared his shoulders and turned to face the younger man head-on. “What makes you think we promised them anything?”

“Humph. The way you’re moving people in—” He motioned toward Velasquez.
